Your new resolution: stick to your resolutions

New years is almost upon us and the dreaded list of resolutions is about to appear on many of our smartphones.  Things you want to do, bucket list items you’ve promised yourself you’ll get to, experiences you are determined to have, and the golden goose: ACTUALLY GOING TO THE GYM.

Sadly, despite all the wants, desires, and exclamations, very little will actually come to fruition.


Well according to some, if it isn’t fun, or we don’t see instant rewards, we’re less likely to stick to our goals.  In fact, the majority of people abandon the changes they make by the time February rolls around.  Kind of sad.

Lets change that

Lets not wait for New Years to roll around before we start make changes; lets make solid plans regarding our resolutions so that we stick to them; lets create a new resolution: making sure our goals last past February!

How can we change?

Make committed plans

If you want to travel more, then sit down now and start to map out travel destinations for the next year. Ask for the time off from work and gather up a friend group (or go solo!).  By committing to friends, or to work, you’re more likely to follow through.  By planning ahead you’ll also be able to snatch up cheaper travel dates and begin saving so that you can really enjoy yourself at your destination.  Plus, seeing those lower prices may help ensure you go through with it too.

Pay for your resolutions

If you want to go to the gym more, pay for it.  If you pay for something you’re more likely to value and use it.  I say this, but the caveat: don’t sign up for something you know you won’t use, or you know you hate.  The only gyms I’ll pay for, for instance, are ones that offer classes like zumba or other dance workouts.  I enjoy those and know I’ll use them.  However, I hate things like Barry’s Bootcamp, so will definitely never fork over any dollars for that.

Alternatively, around the new year, knowing that people are resolving to work out more, many gyms/fitness centers will offer sign on deals, or trial periods.  Sign up for those and see; sometimes the act of going just for a short period of time will get you in the habit, or you’ll have the ability to try something out and determine if you like it or not.

If you want to lead a healthier lifestyle, for instance one that includes cooking more, then sign up for a subscription to a meal service.  Some examples are Purple Carrot, HelloFresh and Blue Apron.  These, admittedly, may not be super budget friendly, but I think the act of cooking regularly can kickstart you to where you automatically WANT to cook more.  Who knows, maybe you’ll get to a point where you don’t need the service anymore! (at least thats what happened with me!)

Manage your expectations.

Change is sloooowwww.  In all aspects of life. So be patient.  Instant gratification is also instantly gone.  If you want something to last, then it will take time.

Start small

Developing a habit requires that you continue to do something for at least 12 days.  So, instead of telling yourself you’ll go to the gym everyday for a month, go everyday for 12 days.  Rather than cooking everyday, cook for 12 days–or whatever pattern you choose to abide by.

Start small.  Let yourself get used to doing something different.  If what you initially plan doesn’t work, then after the first 12 days are up, use the next 12 days to try something different.  Allow yourself to really develop a habit that actually works for you and is sustainable.

Alternative: instead of changing habits, change your mind set.

Another approach that I heard about on the radio recently on my morning commute, was to pick a word to live by this year. Instead of focusing on changing routines and habits, focus on one word around which you can develop habits naturally.

As an example, say you choose “balance”. Every decision you make, or action you take then can be seen in the context of “balance”, giving yourself balance, staying in balance, etc. etc. So instead of saying you’ll go to the gym, just tell yourself that you will be “healthy” next year.  Then your actions can be driven by the desire to be “healthy”, whatever that means to you, and however you’re able to make that happen in your life.

I think this is a great way to change up how you view things and approach different situations. It also may relieve some of the pressure that we put on ourselves for introducing certain actions or habits into our lives.

At the end of the day..

Incorporate changes that work for you.  Don’t compare yourself to what anyone else is doing, and take it one day, one resolution, one goal at a time.

My resolutions so far for 2019

  1. Check a few more spots off my travel bucketlist: already booked a couple of trips!
  2. Maintain a healthy lifestyle: for me = regular gym, healthy eating, better quality sleep
  3. Work on more financial investments
  4. Create passive income stream: eek
  5. Reboot blog newsletters: yassss
  6. Pick up a regular hobby: maybe tennis or dance?
  7. Read more books: I’m making a list!

  1. Love this. I’m not a big fan of New Years resolution because most people never follow through. This blog does a good job of coming up with a plan, and addressing mindset whic is so huge. Thanks for sharing
